Problems Linking an Excel workbook to a Word document

I am trying to link a excel spreadsheet to a word document. I am copying the excel data I want, then in Word I am Edit,Paste Special and linking the object so that if I make corrections in Excel they will transfer to Word. I save Word then I close it. When I open it back up it says already open myfile.xls My Excel worksheet is closed. Then it says new correction will not update. How can I save my word document so that when I open the excel worksheet and the word document again I can make changes and they will transfer. Thanks for your help.
