problems saving to an older version

A

Andy

I am trying to save from publisher 2002 to publisher 98 but I keep getting
this error:- There is a picture on page 1 that is too large to be converted
to an older version of publisher. I have tried removing the picture but then
it just comes back with the same error but on a different page/picture.
Any help would be appreciated.

The reason this is relates to photo compression. Publisher 2002 and 2003
both support image compression. Publisher 2000 and older do not. So for
example, if you have a 1 mb picture in Publisher 2002/03, that same picture
could be 17mb or more when inserted into the older versions (because they
store photos uncompressed).

In order for Publisher 2002/03 to convert the file to a 98 file, it needs to
have all the aspects of the 98 format, including loss of compression.

One option, but not ideal, is to use an image editing program to reduce the
picture size even more before exporting.

If you had a program like PhotoDraw 2000v2, Digital Image Pro 10 Suite,
Expression (Photoshop, etc) you could open your images in those program and
then resave the image with lower quality. For example, if you had a
photoshop image that was 15mb, you could use the file saving features to
convert the image to gif file format and reduce the images to 15kb if need
be (with substantial loss of quality going THAT small).

I'm having the same problem since installing Service Pack 2 for Windows XP.
If you don't have an image editing program, try this:

In Publisher, right click on the image and click Paste.
Open Paint (under Accessories in Windows XP)
click Edit, then Paste
The image will be pasted into Paint.
You don't need to make any changes to the image
Still in Paint, click Edit, then Copy
Back to Publisher, click on the original image to select it (sizing handles
will be visible)
Right click on the image and click Paste
This replaces the original image with the image from Paint

This seems to reduce the size of the image so that the conversion works.

Depending on the number of images, you may just want to do the above for all
images, or do one at a time, trying the conversion after each one.

I just discovered this yesterday so, if you try it, please let me know if it
works for you.

Brian,

I found that if the image has been resized smaller (height and width) within
Publisher, the image can be copied and pasted into Paint or a graphics
program, e.g., Corel PhotoPaint, then copied back to Publisher (without
making any changes to the image in the Graphics program) and the image is
reduced in size (kb) and the conversion works.

This may be a duplicate post but there was an instruction error in my first
post.

This pasted images is smaller (kb) and the conversion may work.

Depending on the number of images, you may want to do the above for all
