Problems sending large emails

Can anyone help me with!!

When I send emails larger than about 500kb, the mail sits
in the outbox and does not send - it comes up with an
error - however the mail is actually sent and as I do not
know that it has been sent, the recipient ends up getting
loads of copies!

Help please!
