problems when converting office 2007

whenever i open Microsoft Office i get told that in order to get back all the
features i had in the Trial Version i must upgrade to the full version of
Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007. this is no problem, i click
'convert', enter my product key, which is accepted as being correct, and
click 'install now'
After the configuration has been completed i am told that i must close and
restart Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 in order to allow setup
changes to take effect and that i will be prompted to activate my software
when it is restarted.
However when i restart Office 2007 i get no such prompts, and instead just
get informed again that my version of Microsoft Office has expired.
I am using Windows Vista, does anybody know why it is refusing to allow me
to upgrade? and what can be done to rectify the problem?
thank you

Is the key you are using the one that came with Office from your computer manufacturer or is is a key that you purchased from Microsoft?

The key you got with your computer is for the trial version. To convert to the full version, you need to purchase a retail key. However, save yourself some grief and purchase the suite that you want from Amazon.com - free shipping and usually a lot cheaper than buying from Microsoft.
