Problems with a hyperlink to documents on my computer

Steve

In Excel I run into a problem after I've created a hyperlink to a document on
my computer. I use Excel to create project maps, which are simply diagrams
that help me organize things, and I like to set hyperlinks from the objects
in the diagram to documents on my computer. However, sometimes after I've
created the link I'll click on the object and get an error that says Excel
cannot open the specified file.

The objects I use in the diagram are either shapes from the object palette
or a picture. I place these objects in the Excel document, select the object
and hit Ctrl+k. This opens the hyperlink dialogue box. I click document, then
select, and find the document I want linked (this document is usually in a
different folder than where there Excel file is stored). After I've saved my
changes and I click on the object, it sometimes tells me that the specified
document cannot be opened. If I close the Excel file and re-open it with the
hyperlink still intact, the program will crash when I click on the link.

If I hover my mouse over the linked object the path to the document pops up,
and the specified path is incorrect on these broken links. The path is
incorrect even though I've double checked that I selected the correct
document, and even if I re-select the document. Not only that but if I hit
Ctrl+k, the path in the link box is correct; however, when I hover over the
object the specified path is incorrect.

I am assuming that Excel has stored this incorrect path somewhere and is
trying to pull the document from there. It can't find the document and gives
me the error. If that's the case, I have no idea how to fix it. Help?

Right-click the hyperlink and choose "Hyperlink" from the menu.

The address you want is stored in the Hyperlink field codes (i.e. It is
stored in a partition of the hyperlink text).

Cheers

Hello,

Thanks for the suggestion. When I do this the address in the hyperlink field
code is the correct address. However, even though the address appears correct
here the address that pops up when you hover over the link is still
incorrect, and the link does not work. This is true even if I manually type
in the correct path in the hyperlink field.

Just check on File>Properties that you have not specified an "Hyperlink
Base".

If you have, things get seriously weird ‹ the hyperlink base, if present, is
pre-pended to each URL.

Hope this helps
