Product ID activation

Does anyone know if there is any way to find out if a
particular Product ID has already been activated BEFORE
installing it on a PC. I hate to go out and waste a
customer's time - only to find out the CD has already been
used.

Well the CD of course ins't an issue but the Product Code is. Other then
contacting Microsoft you cannot check it.
