Hello,

I installed Windows Office 2007 Professional a while a go from a download
from MS web site. I've since bought a medialess Office 2007 Pro license (an
empty CD case) as my trial was coming to and end. I've tried putting in the
product key several times when the Office application asks for it upon
start-up but it keeps telling me it's invalid. What can the problem be?

Where did you purchase the product key from? If it wasn't a
purchase directly from Microsoft to validate the Trial
version, the product key will not work. Many times this
type of key is purchased by some vendor as part of a
package from Microsoft and then broken up and resold
individually by the vendor. If this is what happened
(purchased from other than Microsoft) it is now time to
contact MS to report the vendor for improperly selling the
license.

Hi,

The vendor is a massive online store, dabs.com. I don't quite understand
how this is improper, what have they done wrong? I've downloaded a trial
from MS for Office 2007 Pro and bought a medialess version of Office 2007
Pro. Isn't that what you are supposed to do if you installed the software?

I've ordered a "backup" CD from MS for just over £10, perhaps this will
solve the problem?

The Medialess Licence Kit is an OEM Licence designed for system builders
supplying a new PC.
I'm unsure whether this requires a 'special' type/version of the Office
installation, in order to use the Licence.
Dabs support will tell you, if nobody else chimes in.

Hope it does but the media that you purchased probably won't work since your
original purchased key did not unlock the trial software you downloaded.
You also don't qualify for the media according to Microsoft's web site since
the product wasn't installed from an original OPK Master Kit from a vendor.
Do a search on Microsoft's web site for "medialess license" (put quotes
around it in the search box.) There is a lot of information on the site.
Your "massive online store" has, in all probability, violated Microsoft's
licensing agreement for the Medialess license.

The reason that the key didn't work is that the software key is an OEM
license and the downloaded trial software needs to have the license
purchased from Microsoft directly with a backup CD purchased from Microsoft.

In a review of the DABS.COM site they even tell you ---sorry about the html
in the post ----"Note: OEM System Builder Software is unsuitable for sale to
consumer customers. Click for details. " on this page

£182.28 is a lot of money to find out that what you purchased is not what
you wanted (if that is the version you purchased.)

No they haven't violated the MS Licence agreement, this particular store
supplies to both retail & system builders. Unfortunately their on line info
for this specific product doesn't really explain the difference / product
required to utilise this Licence.
Its left to the purchaser to determine as to whether they are able to use
it.
This side of the pond you can obtain both OEM / Retail / Academic versions
without any 'proof of use' its left to the purchaser to determine whether
they are in breach of any licence terms, and as such whether they can use
the product.

And unfortunately no matter what side of the pond you happen to live (my
side is the US) this only reflects back to Microsoft and not the seller of
the license. I don't have access to it but I would believe (IMHO) that
Microsoft's license agreement for the medialess license packs to the
retailer state only to sell to those who the retailer have actually put the
software on the computer when it was built.

This person purchased a computer without Office, downloaded the MS trial
from MS's site and then tried to activate with a license purchased from
another source (DABS.COM.) I think in the end the OP is going to get
Royal-ly screwed (pun intended.) If he can't get a refund from DABS.COM he
is out his money because I don't think that he will get it to activate.

There has been a number of articles over here as to whether much of the MS
EULA and their other License agreements are actually legally
enforceable.(this applies to other sofware manufacturers as well)
Unfortunately they dont appear to have been tested in court; - I'm not
refering to illegal copying.

Just to let you know I received the £10 CD from Microsoft last week and have
just installed it using the key I brought separately and its worked. So
I'll do the same for my desktop machine at some point.

Well in that case contact your vendor for this problem.

Are you sure you are entering the correct key? Sometimes if you are
visually challenged (like me!) you may need to use a magnifying glass to
read from the CD cover. If, however, you received the product key by
email then the best way is to use copy and paste to enter the product
key. This avoids problems of mis-reading the key and entering it
incorrectly. The less typing or keying you do the less chances of
making any mistakes!
