Progress Bar w/o % Compele

C

Catfish Hunter

Does anyone know how to make the progress bar show up w/o giving % complete?
Would like to have it move with the current date.

Hi Catfish,

I assume you are referring to the progress bars drawn on the Gantt bars
not progress the progress line.

The [Current Date] does not appear as a choice in Format > Bar Styles,
but you can create a custom Finish field (for example Finish10), set the
formula for Finish10 to [Current Date] and then use Finish10 as the "To"
in the Bar Styles option.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Clearly, I have not had enough coffee this morning. The first sentence
should read:
"I assume you are referring to the progress bars drawn on the Gantt bars
not the progress line inserted through Tools > Tracking > Progress
Lines."

So sorry.

Hi Catfish,

Insert the custom field (Finish 10 for example) in a table. With the
custom field selected, right click to show the shortcut menu and choose
Customize Field to show the Customize Fields dialog box. Click on the
Formula... button. In the Formula dialog box, click the Field drop
down, select Project > Date > Current date. That will insert [Current
Date] in the Formula dialog box. You may also just type [Current Date]
in the Formula dialog box.

Hope this helps.

Julie this woks but...
As the current date goes past when the task actually completed the progress
bar continues to move with the current date. Any ideas on how to make it stop
when the task is complete?

Hi Catfish,

I don't understand what you are trying to accomplish but the following
formula will set the value in Finish10 to Actual Finish if the task is
100%, if not it sets it to the current date:

IIf([% Complete]<1,[Current Date],[Actual Finish])

Perhaps if you could explain what you are trying to do I can be of more
assistance.

At this job site I can not get % complete. The client will not give this to me.
I still need to see the progress bar. I need to to stop when the task is
complete. The last formula you sent works for most cases and I can live with
that. Unless you have a better idea.

Hi Catfish,

I'm glad the formula works. It sounds as if you just want the "visual"
of the progress bar but can't really get accurate tracking data? Have
you thought about using the Update as Scheduled command on the Tracking
toolbar? That will mark tasks as complete through the Status Date or
Current Date.

Catfish, % Complete *is* duration. So if there is a task that is 10 days
long and the current date is halfway between it's scheduled start and end
dates and work has been done according to schedule (no one called in sick
and so a scheduled day was missed, for example) that task is 50% complete
and can be nothing else. You don't need to client to give you this - in
fact, if he DOES give you a percent complete he's probably wrong since he
probably doesn't understand the difference and relationships between
duration, work, and physical progress.

As you have posed the question, all your progress lines are doing is
indicating the current date against the backdrop of the project plan and
present no information that is actually of USE in managing the schedule.
You can do the same thing with a lot less trouble by flipping the pages of a
"day-at-a-glance" desk calendar <grin>.
