proj. 98 hangs on startup

I have already searched the knowledgebase for this one...

I have one user running Win 2k, Proj. 98, Office 2K. 40
GB hard drive, with 256MB Ram. When she attempts to open
Project, it just hangs. Never opens, never shown as not
responding in task manager, and the winproj.exe shows up
in the processes, but never takes any processor
resources. I have already done a complete
uninstall/reinstall and it did not change anything. It
also makes no difference if other apps are open or not.
Finally, it happens whether the pc has just been booted up
or has been on for several hours.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi.
Not sure whether this will be helpful at all...
I have had a lot of problems with Project98, and for me it seemed to centre
around the printers users have on the system. I could reproduce the problem
you describe by setting up a newish printer driver as the default printer,
rebooting, and then opening Project.
Try changing the printer to an older printer, and rebooting or just changing
the default printer, or remove all printers, remove project; then install a
single local oldish printer, and then project, and it might work!

Some of the things I was reading about it suggested that Project98 was too
old, and was incompatible with modern printers (among other things). It is
not supported by Microsoft any more.

In the end I told them to get rid of Project98, and the problem disappeared.
(I guess if the machine is exactly like other machines you have, you could
try a shareware program called winrescue to copy the registry from a working
PC. - As long as you don't blame me if it doesn't work, and you then change
ip's, computer name, do backups etc)
HTH,
Ian.
