Setup of how I use MSP:
MSP Pro 2003 with all of the updates
Computer is:
Windows XP w/ service update 2
Office XP
Pent 4 – 3.2 ghz
2 GB RAM
90-110 individual projects
Primarily use fixed work with maybe 5% fixed duration
Number of tasks in a given project ranges from 8-150
Duration of a given project ranges from 1 week to 3 years
Linked to a Resource Pool of 11 Resources
Resources work around 6-12 hours a day
Do not use OT pay
Inserted into a Master Project
Stored and run off my hard drive – I have tried storing and running off of
server with worse results.
Problems:
Leveling Resources:
Level Resources by:
i.
Opening Master Project and Resource Pool (read/write mode-middle option)
ii. Select
Level Resources in Master Project
1. Week by week
2. Time frame of near the current day to about 2 years in future.
3. Manual
4. Clear leveling values before leveling – checked
5. Leveling can adjust indiv assignments on a task – checked
6. Leveling can create splits in remaining work
Takes anywhere from 4 hours to 5 days to level resources.
i. I
have re-created the Master Project and Resource Pool before. It seems when
these are “newâ€, everything works for a couple of weeks and then starts
degrading.
ii. This
last time, I created just a new Resource Pool and it did not help.
iii. I did
choose the 3rd option of opening the Resource Pool with a new Master Project
and tried leveling and it did not work. I was not even able to save all the
indiv projects as described below.
After leveling takes place, I am not able to save all of the individual
projects:
i. I
will say “Yes†to save all and I will get error msgs that say it cannot find
certain projects. The projects it cannot find are random.
ii. After
I close the Resource Pool, I am usually able to save the projects that were
not able to save.
Currently, I cannot open the Resource Pool and Master Project at the same
time and save the indiv files.
Several times (3) the Resource Pool becomes completely corrupt where MSP
crashes as soon as it opens.
When entering time on certain resources, MSP will lock up for periods of 5
minutes to 2 hours before I can continue entering time. I only have the
individual projects open without the Resource Pool and the Master Project
open.
I cannot run our Symantec software while running MSP. All of the above
problems were exaggerated when running this software.
