Project 2007 beta bug

Hi there,

First, sorry if I am posting this to the wrong place. This seems to be the
closest thing to a bug report location I have been able to find.

I have just installed the Office 2007 beta and have a small project I
developed in Project 2007. I have encountered a serious and pretty
fundamental bug - I have a list of about 15 resources, and I am now unable to
add to the list or edit it. When I do, Project crashes. I have tried
restarting, which changes nothing. I have tried to recreate in another
project and don't encounter the same problem, but every time I attempt to
modify this particular project's resources I encounter the same thing.

The project consists of 4 subprojects which are contained in separate files.

Anyone have any thoughts/suggestions?

Thanks!

Hi Dan,

I haven't had a chance to experiment with the beta yet, but a couple of
questions:

Are you trying to add additional resources to the resource sheet or
trying to assign additional resources to tasks?
You note that the "problem" project has subprojects. Are they sharing a
common resource pool?

Project 2003 without SP-2 had a similar issue where you could not add
and save multiple resources in a pool file. Project did not crash but
would send a message similar to:
"The file cannot be opened"
* Check that the file name and path are correct.
* Check that the file format is recognized by Project.. Project files
saved in a version earlier than Microsoft Project 98 can't be opened."

If you look at a thread in this newsgroup started on 6/1 between
Big_Bad_Yellow_Eskimo and me, you can see some of that conversation.

You note that the crash did not occur in a new file. Can you pinpoint
what the difference is between the crash prone file and the new one?

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Julie

Hi Julie,

Thanks for the quick response! Please note that, while I consider myself an
expert user in Excel and Word (>10 years), I am a novice with Project.

re adding resources: I was attempting to add to the resource sheet. It is
possible that this is the source of the problem; I am going to attempt to
create a resource pool instead and see if this resolves the problem. This
may in fact be the heart of the issue - I assumed that resources were
automatically shared.

re attempting to recreate in a new file: the major difference is that the
test file didn't have subprojects. I'm going to create one with subprojects
and see if the problem recurs.

In the meantime, I have found a workaround - if I add resources "on the
fly," they seem to be correctly added to the resource pool.
