Project 95 to Project 2007 -- How to Convert?

I recently purchased Project 2007 and went to open some old Project 95 files
as a starting point for getting back into the "project world" after having
been out of it since 1998. I have 15 Project 95 files.

I have a series of questions:

1) Since Project 2007 won't opent Project 95 files, it says to save them in
at least Project 98 format ... is there another way?

2) In my archives, I found a CD for Project 98 (complete with it's CD Key)
which I have attempted to load, but it is an "Upgrade" version and can't find
a previous version of Project (my PC is only 3 years old and no version of
Project was ever loaded on this PC). Microsoft no longer supports Project 98
and won't (can't) give me a key for Project 98.
a) Is there a way I can get a Product Key for Project 98?

3) Is there any other way I can convert the Project 95 files.

Thanks for any help in this area,
Kit

Kit,

You could look at saving as an Excel file from Project 95 and then opening
from Excel in Project 2007 - check out the file format options in the
File>Save As.. command. This should provoke the Export Map Wizard - once you
have exported your first project to Excel you can then use the same "Map" to
export the remaining projects. You can specify as many fields to export as
you want - be aware however that the Outline Structure of your plan may be
lost if you do not export the "Summary" Task field. Again when opening from
Excel in Project 2007 once you have imported from your first excel
spreadsheet you can use the same Import map for the remaining projects. This
approach may be a bit clunky but it is one way of overcoming your problem, I
hope it helps.

Kit,
Sure, no problem. If you can zip and send the files to me at the below
address, assuming they are not corrupt, I will convert them and send
them back.

I and fellow MVP Mike Glen have done this for numerous other users over
the years.

John,

I have taken you up on your offer and have sent the files to you. Thanks
for your willingness to help!

Dominic,

This would have been helpful IF I had Project 95 available to me, which I
don't. I only have an upgrade version of Project 98, which is of no use
unless I could have gotten a product key for a full version, and a full
version of Project 2007. I also received a reply from John, which I am
pursuing.

Thanks for your attempt.

John,

You're a saint! It had been so long since I had seen these files that I had
no idea it would be such a difficult task for you. Honestly, I would not
have blamed you at all if you had said, "Kit, there is too much 'baggage'
associated with these files; I can't do it for you," but you didn't. You
said you would convert these and you did it, even though it turned out to be
an onerous task. Thank you, John!

John,
I have a similar dilemma-but with only 2 files. Would you be able to assit
with my file conversion as well?

Chris,
You're not dense. My encoded e-mail is shown at the bottom of the
message you referenced. Nonetheless, here it is again.

John,
I am working with an old MPP file and only have Project 2003. Do yo
think you might be able to convert my file to something that can b
opened in 2003?
Thanks in advance for your response.

Rick,
Sure, just zip it and send it to the address below. If it's not corrupt
I'll convert it and send it back.

Hi John,
I have followed this string and hope that I can also humbly ask if you can
convert two 2007 files into something I can open with 2000? I bought 2000
yesterday but I made the two files in a trial version of 2007 and can't open
them. i understand if you decline. Thanks either way.

Bob
Bob,
I've never "downconverted" a Project file so I have no more experience
than you do. However, two things are relevant in your case. First, some
trial versions of software applications do not allow a complete save. I
don't know if that's true with the trial version of Project 2007.
Second, Project 2007 uses a different file format than previous versions
of Project. If you want to be able to open a Project 2007 file in an
earlier version, you need to specifically save the file in the old
version format. For Project 2007 that option is given under File/Save As.

John,

I also have an old MS Project file (Probably 1995, but I'm not positive)
that I would like to bring up to Project 2003. Would you be willing to take
on converting yet another one?

I have read the various strings describing how you have helped quite a few
people. At some point you may need to just start saying no so that you don't
continue to receive these annoying requests. I certainly understand if you
have reached that point now...

Rusty,
I'm still game. Go ahead and zip your file and send it to me at the
address below. When you send the file please answer the following
questions.
1. What company do you work for?
2. What is their main product or service?
3. What do you do at the company?
4. Where are you located?

Hi

I also have an old project file. Could I ask a favour and ask if you could update this to a new format of msproject?
