Project calendar high-lights

I would like to put vertical marker strips in the Project gant-chart, to mark
events or times when work is possible/not possible due to other activities.
The non-working time function (eg Christmas holiday) gives a suitable stripe
but also stretches out the time-lines; I just want to mark items of interest
without actually changing the schedule.
Any ideas?

The only way I could figure out how to do this is to create a new calendar
(Tools - Change Working Time - New...) and for all the dates you want colored
set to non-working time. As long as you don't assign this calendar to any of
the tasks or resources, this will not affect your schedule.

Next in the Gantt chart, Right-click and select Timescale. On the
Non-working time tab, select the calendar you just created. This will
display everything you set as non-working time on the Gantt chart.
