Project Manager Time

Many of my project managers are also resources in their own projects. I want
to be able to factor in that about 10 to 20 percent of their time is spent as
a project manager. How can I do this without assigning them to the Project
Summary task?

Robert,
One simple method is to set up a separate task line for their effort
(i.e. Manage xyz project). Then assign them as the resource at whatever
allocation is appropriate.

Hope this helps.

Hi Robert,

Just to make sure there is no misunderstanding here.
Assigning them to a summary task or to PM task s John suggests will by no
means change their assignment to the other taks, it will only show them as
overallocated if they still are assigned 100% there.

No function in Project will change assignment units on a task by working on
an other task.

How do I get an overall task to stretch the length of the overall project.
For example, I want to show that the project manager is spending 10% of their
time across all task on the entire project. My thought is, the only way to do
that would be to assign them to every task or to the summary tasks. Is this
correct?

Robert,
You could, but those wouldn't be the best choices, particularly putting
resources on a Summary Line. There are a couple other methods that are
much better.

One is to simply create a normal performance task for management that
spans the whole duration of the project plan. Of course if the project
shortens or gets longer, the duration of that task will have to be
manually adjusted.

Another alternative is to create what is called a Hammock Task. For more
information on setting that up, go to our MVP website at:
http://www.mvps.org/project/faqs.htm
and look at FAQ 19 - Hammock tasks

Hope this helps.
