Project workaround for Effort-Driven Resourcing Re-Calc Issue

I want to put in a task duration (e.g 1/16/2006 -to 6/30/2006) and a unit of
work for an individual (e.g. 15 days over that span) without having Project
recalculate either (and thus the system would simploy calculate that the
person would be working x% of their time, on average, during that period
given the duration and hours). To accomplish this, I figured out, you have to
switch from effort driven (checked), task type "fixed work" to task type
"duration", but do exactly as follows:

1) Start off with "Task Type" set to "Fixed Work" (or you'll have to do the
dreaded duration<->start/end date recalc dance.
2) Set you start and end dates to the desired length of time, and select OK.
The system then calculates the proper "Duration".
3) Now, switch your "Task Type" to "Fixed Duration", which will then freeze
the duration calc'd in step 2 and allow you to enter work for your resources
(days of work during the alotted time). Project then calcs your "units", or %
allocation of the individuals time to that task during that period (which is
what I wanted).

Hi,

You have a shorter path if you like:
Enter the task (with any task type) with the desired start and with any
duration
Drag the end of the task to where you would like it to end
Insert a column "Work" and enter the work
Now assign the resource; units will be calculated.

Hope this helps
