Protection of 1st row (headings) only

I have a rather large table with headings in the first row. I have used the "Data + Flter + Autofilter" feature on this row so that I can sort and query the data.
Since I have found that sometimes when I select a column I have accidentally affected the wntire column with a change meant for a single cell in that column, I would like to "lock" the fist row while leaving all the other vells unlocked.
However once I "protect" the sheet, the sorting features of the cells in the locked cells do not work.
Is there a way to lock the contents of the first row without locking this feature?

MUCH obliged.

No. Once a sheet is protected (locked in your terminology) certain features
are unavailable. However, you should be able to lock (Tools-Protection-Lock)
the cells in the first row, unlock the other cells in the data area, filter
the list and then protect the worksheet.
