A new background design shows up ok in the page layout but
will not show in the web preview; the background has
a .pub ext; how do I convert to .GIF as the standard
program bckgnd ext are??

Most, if not all of the backgrounds are in the Publisher folder in a file called
"Backgrnd." They are in the .gif format. Is this a background you created yourself?
Can you select it? If you can, copy, paste to Paint, save as a gif. If you cannot
select it, try a print screen, paste it to Paint, crop it and save as.
