Am running Publisher 2003 on Windows XP SP2. Also Works Suite 2005, Norton
Internet Security 2005 and Norton Antivirus, Spybot and Ad-Aware SE personal,
all updated regularly and run with no problems indicated. No problems with
Publisher until the last week in March.

New, Save, Save as, etc. in pull-down menu and all icons in side toolbar
are now grayed out. (Have used Publisher from 95 through to current 2003).

Have tried Detect and Repair from CD, Reinstall from CD, Uninstall from
control panel and reinstall all without success though after each operation I
get message ‘has been repaired or installed successfully’. Have tried System
Restore to an earlier date but this left Publisher corrupt and unable to
uninstall. Used System Restore to return to current date and present
condition.
Have disabled antivirus and internet security but to no effect. Am reluctant
to uninstall Norton as it was pre-installed on my computer and I have no disk
and have 9 months subscription outstanding.

Have clicked on ‘activate’ from help menu but this just returns me to the
program. I have not installed any new programs between Publisher working OK
and not working.

Have read similar FAQ’s and deleted all verclsid.exe files except the
pre-fetch one and also deleted update kb908531 but no help. Have also
downloaded and run hp.vbs and patch kb912812 but again no good. Am at a loss
what to do next, can anyone help?

The telephone number I gave you is incorrect, I am truly sorry.

The real number is 888.652.2342
The International number is 716.871.2919

I have no idea who you might get dialing the previous number.

Mary Thank you for your promp reply.
Tried your corrected number but they only deal with USA products, I'm in the
UK and are having difficulty with them.

Have downloaded Installer Cleanup utility and ran it and re-installed
Publisher 2003 but made no difference. Will await call back from UK MS help
on activation.

716.871.2919

There is actually a separate UK number (that doesn't cost a fortune in
international charges to ring) listed in the activation dialog.

We can't dial US numbers over here, we just get an error (or a local number
that has the first six digits of the US number), just the same way as if you
tried to dial 07837 308273 over there you'd get the same problem.
International prefices are necessary. +1 is the prefix to get to the US
(and Canada). Over here (and throughout most of Europe), 00 is +.

(Sorry for the rant, but it frustrates me how when non-NA-residents give
numbers they have to give an international prefix, but when NA residents
give numbers to non-NA residents, we have to work out that it's a NA number
and add the prefix for ourselves)

Rob Giordano \(Crash\)

The past few years I've become terribly disappointed (I'm being gentle) with
all the Symantec/Norton products I had on my machines and have removed (with
great difficulty and consternation and cursing) them from all machines I
own...and they all run much mo' betta now. I'm still looking for a suitable
replacement for WinFax Pro.

| Ah. I see you understand at least one of the reasons why I use AVG.

Mary, your telephone number worked OK but microsoft USA could not verify the
activation of a UK version of a product. They advised me to contact microsoft
UK, which I did but still had problems over the number of digits in the ID
number.

Eventually put through to the technical people who eventually phoned back
and after 20 minutes of deleting files and editing the registry still could
not solve the problem with publisher. They said further research was
necessary and the would phone back tomorrow - noe today.

Unfortunately they left me with my antivirus and internet security not
working and though I could read messages I could not post a reply! I have now
restored my system to before the engineer did his work but still have the
problem with publisher. I await his return call.

I have run the Installer Cleanup Utility but still no good. I have also lost
the pre-fetch version of the file verclsid.

I will keepyou up to date when I have more news.

I note posts indicating disappointment with Symantec products. Should I go
back to AVG?
