Publisher 2007 textboxes move themselves around

M

Maggielena

I wrote awhile ago, but it appears that my question did not make it through
for some reason, so I'll restate it: I've used Publisher for many, many
years, so this is not a matter of being new to it. I am using (as I have
hundreds of times before) the catalog template so I can print four 8 1/2 x 5"
pages on one 8 1/2 x 11" landscape paper. The booklet has a large number of
pages, but it IS divisible by 4. If I delete one page, I delete 3 more to
keep the 4 evenly divisible. Yet when I, for instance, cut out a textbox and
paste it in on another blank page, other pages move around. The latest time
I was moving some pages around, and two other pages (textboxes) moved
themselves to the front, before the Table of Contents, even though there were
not pages there before...the TOC was the first page originally. Does anyone
know what's going on? It's really getting frustrating, and I would
appreciate your help. Thanks.

When you delete pages, elements remaining will be on a different page number.
This is the nature of a booklet. If you want your TOC to be on a particular
page, drag it to the scratch area, delete the four pages and drag the TOC to the
assigned page.

I THINK understand what you said, but I'm not sure I made my problem clear.
That is why I said that if I delete pages that I delete a total of four
pages. I understand that if XY is on page 16, and I delete pages 12, 13, 14,
and 15, that XY will be renumbered as necessary to maintain the sequence of
page numbering, becoming 12. But I do not understand why that page 16 would
become page 1 or 2 or 45 or 46. For this I need more explanation, please. I
mean, I have my booklet set up in five chapters, each with its own topic. I
see that I do not need some of the blank pages in the document, so I delete 4
of them. All of a sudden my chapters have pages from other chapters
interlaced in them. I think that if I am deleting one page out of each of 4
sections, that the ORDER OF MY REMAINING PAGES should be retained, even
though the page numbers change. Like I said, it never moved around like this
before, so why now? Sorry to be thick headed, but I don't understand this.

I think you have a corrupted Publication. Publisher does not arbitrarily move
pages around without a command. I have a booklet (36 pages) that I have deleted
pages from every possible scenario, I am not getting your results. Have you
tried deleting the pages with the page sorter? Hold shift and select the pages
you want to delete or hold control if the pages are not in sequence.

Re-save the Publication with a new name.
How big is the document? Can you send it to me?

I would love to send it to you, but it is 42.5 MG (84 pages), and my email
won't handle that. I have NOT used the page sorter, but I will try that.
This is my first booklet-type document in 2007 Publisher, so I do not know if
it is a corrupt document or not (although I tend to agree with you on this
now that you have mentioned it), but I have resaved the document with other
names a number of times as the content progressed and the book "grew." It
has been quite a trial, believe me.

Mary, I appreciate your help, and I am especially glad to hear that this is
not going to be an ongoing thing with other publications in the 2007
Publisher. I was already planning on learning InDesign as an alternative, so
you know I am desperate.

Thanks for all your help and time. Maggielena

Your file is huge, hypothetically Publisher can create 2 GB publications. If you
turned off detailed display for the pictures I wonder if that would make a
difference. You could be having some virtual memory issues. Try increasing the
virtual memory (swap file).

It is huge, but in the "old" Publisher I had larger ones frequently. On a
very rare occasion, I have had a Published document open with a dialog box
telling me that certain pictures are not showing due to lack of memory, so
you may be on the right track although it didn't happen on this document. To
be truthful, just a few minutes ago I "finished" the document..I got
everything moved back again, and for now it stayed where it belonged. I
saved it, renaming it, to a travel drive to take into the office for printing
(I work from home.). I don't THINK it will have a problem as long as no one
makes any more changes in it. It's when I start moving things around that
this happens. But I will file away your suggestions for the next time, which
is sure to come! Thanks for helping me. Maggielena

Just be certain to move the file to your hard drive before opening your
document. Publisher is not a happy camper with removable media.

Now that you have said that, yes, when I first opened this document from the
travel drive I had a problem, but opening from the hard drive was fine. My,
there are lots of ins and outs, aren't there? Thanks for the kind reminder.

I didn't know such a site existed! Fantastic! Since I have conquered this
document and have it safely saved, I will not bother Mary with it. But when
and if I have another one, I will take you up on this. I've saved all the
wonderful hints you all have given me, and they will be used over and over.
Thanks. Maggie
