Publisher and Access

Through trial and error, I can get our newsletter mail merge done. However
there must be some simple instructions out there somewhere. My basic problem
is I do not understand the various types of data sources. I browse for a
data source and come up with six or eight technical names. I find that
clicking on jet 4 lets me get into the access data base, but that was just a
lucky guess. Is there any basic information that could help me?

Open the control panel, open the Administrative Tools folder, double-click Data
Sources (ODBC) and take a look.

Version is 2003 (Part of Office Professional 2003)

It looks like you are clicking the "New Source" button in the My Data
Sources folder when asked to select a data source.
You are actually able to just browse to the database (click the Up Arrow
icon to go up to your My Documents folder) and select it in the Select Data
Source window, withot the complexities of working out which data engine to
use.
