Publisher immediately goes to "Not Responding" mode

I have recently started using a new computer with Windows XP. I am
running Publisher 2000 although I'm told we have Office 97. With my
old computer with Windows 97, I would have occasional problems with
Publisher crashing but it was usually because several programs were
running at once.

Now, I can hardly get into Publisher for 5 or 10 minutes and it becomes
unusable. The first page of the document appears but the program then
freezes up. If I go to the Task Manager, it has 2 entries for the
Publisher file and says they are not responding. After ending the
task, a message comes up about sending an error report. I've even sent
the report a couple times but I don't know what I'm supposed to expect
from this.

I went through the procedure for freeing up disk space in the
"Performance and Maintenance" section and have re-booted several times
to no avail. I checked through the web and tried to install Service
Pack 3 for Publisher 2000 but it couldn't find the program. I'm going
to try the defragmenting procedure tonight but I'm not optimistic.

Disable your printer before opening Publisher.

Expand the details of the error, what does it say?

1. I don't get any error messages publisher just stops functioning.

2. I don't know what you mean about disabling the printer. Do you
mean unistall the printer or remove it from "My Printers"

3. I called Dell and they told me to upgrade my office software. My
co-worker has an XP machine and the old Office Sofware and Publisher
works okay.
