publisher installation and registration

got a software from another person which has already been installed in his
computer but not registered. He realized he really has no use of this program
so he gave it to me. I was able to install it in my computer. Installation
was successful and I wanted to register it. Microsoft replied: "our record
shows that this version has already been activated." What can I do to go on
with registration, or is this not possible?

First of all, the process you are attempting is not *registration*, but
*activation*.

Registration is when you provide Microsoft with your personal details so
that they can inform you about product upgrades, etc.
Activation requires no personal details besides your country, and merely
allows Microsoft to ensure that you have a legitimately-acquired non-copied
version of Publisher.

Use the Phone Activation option instead of the Internet Activation option,
and if the automated process fails, then explain your situation to the
customer service operator: they should then give you an activation code.
