publishing gantt chart

Jackie

I would like to a publish a gantt chart for users that have no access to MS
project.
I would like to include the standard columns that appear in the gantt chart
and the actual chart. Is there a way of doing this? many thanks

A few ways to go. I am assuming you all have Project Standard or
Professional and are not using Project Server. Here are some that we have
used successfully:

1. Install some type of PDF writer to your machine. The obvious choice is
the full version of Adobe Acrobat, but there are others available and some
are free. These programs essentially install a printer on your machine so
that when you print the MPP file it produces a PDF. This is probably most
common.

2. Purchase a third party software that will create the eye candy for you.
I have used both Decision Charts (http://www.decisionedge.com) and Kidasa
Milestones Professional (http://www.kidasa.com) with great success. Decision
Charts makes bit map files for you to paste into things like PowerPoint. It
has some other great features as well. Kidasa Milestones allows you to
create some great eye candy and allows output to HTML which means you can
place HTML out on a network drive and anyone with a browser (and access to
the folder) can view what's going on. Kidasa is my prefered choice (and that
is my personal opinion).

3. Purchase third party MPP file viewers for the desktops as needed.

All of these products in (2) and (3) are listed under companion products on
the MVP website (http://project.mvps.org/) so you can get additional
information.

In addition to Jim's suggestions,

Use the Copy Picture function to paste the Gantt chart and your
favourite columns into a Word document.

You may be able to do something with the 'Save As' and the html file
option but is clunky and I don't really like it.

Thanks Dave
But I tried your option, but I could not get to copy that chart part of the
gantt view
Am I missing something or is this just for the actual columns and not the
actual chart
Your comments most welcome
Many thanks

Thanks Jim
Yes we are not using the Server version
Are there any other options that do not require purchasing other software?
Many thanks

Hi Jackie,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Please see FAQ Item: 16. Project Viewer. Some programs, like Housatonic's,
are cheap and very effective in giving you what you want. Companion
Products give a lot of alternatives.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address:http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

See http://tinyurl.com/2xbhc for Project Tutorials

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

It works all the time for me. What exactly is happening? Have you got
so many columns that there is no room for the Gantt element?

Hi Dave

Thanks for your interest...
I have a 200 tasks project plan with Task
name/duration/start-finish/work/predecessors and resources and I need to
circulate it electronically to an audience that does not have MS Project and
I need to show them the chart part of the Gantt view. Please help!
Many thanks

You didn't answer my question. If you arrange your plan on the screen
as you want it to be seen in the document, then the copy picture has all
sorts of options. Do you have access to word? What do you mean by the
chart element? I understand that to be the bar chart type display on
the right. Are you saying you don't wish to include columns from the
left part of the display?

As things understand I don't understand what results you get when it
goes wrong.

Thanks Dave
Yes I have access to word
I have the following columns: task
name/duration/start-finish/work/predecessors and resources. When I arrrange
the plan on screen I can see all columns and just the beginning of the chart.
However, I want to show these columns + the chart in my output. When I try
the copy option, the output I get is very small.
Thanks again

OK, so if I assume that you have the Gantt organised on your screen as
you would like it to appear on the page, then the problem is likely that
you are copying too many lines.

Select a number of lines by selecting and dragging down on the right of
the Project window. Then you can copy selected lines. There are also
other options such as copy lines on screen, selected lines etc. The
most appropriate number of lines on a screen is 30-40 probably but it
depends on how good your eyes, printers are etc.

When you say it is too small, what is? If it is the text then copy your
plan in sections on different pages. If it is the actual image then use
the tabs to resize it. Also make sure that the timescale is appropriate
for what you want to display.

This will make most sense if you set your page for landscape mode.

Hope this helps.
