Purchasing Microsoft Office

Tom

I recently bought a new computer that came with Windows XP and Microsoft Works. To my disbelief, I recently learned that the Word processor in Works can not read Word documents. Go figure.

Anyhow, I would like to get a version of Office on my computer, and the reason for this posting is to ask the group how they recommend I do this. There are many "no box and no manual" items on ebay, that are around $125. This seems like a good deal to me. Is this legit?

Any advice that any of you have would be much appreciated.

Best,

Tom

There are two versions of Microsoft Works. The basic Works and the Works
Suite. The basic Works does has it's own word processor and does not
include Word. Works Suite includes Word and some other applications.

IMO. I do not trust ebay with any Office version purchase. That is again
IMO.

Windows XP is compatible with Office 2003. Microsoft Works is a qualifying
product for a upgrade to any Office 2003 edition. The Office 2003 editions
differ only in which Office applications are included. For which
applicatications are included in each edition of Office 2003 check here:

http://www.microsoft.com/office/howtobuy/default.mspx

If you have any children and Office 2003 Standard for Students and Teachers
includes applications that your need and your use is non-commercial, then
the Office 2003 Standard for Students and Teachers would be you best choice.

If you only need Word, then the Microsoft Works Suite would be your less
cost buy. However, the version of Word included in the Works Suite is Word
2002.

Microsoft Works can read Word DOC files. Read in the Help file about it.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
