Put the Shortcut Bar at the Top Left of the Screen

N

NewSoul

My Office shortcut bar is ever in the way of the minimize and close buttons
of open windows. Is there a way to position it at the top left of the screen
rather than at the top right? When I try to drag it to the left, it just
snaps back to the top right.

I have the 2000 version.

Check "Autofit into Title Bar" and it will start on the left of your screen.

Well, as originally stated, it is at the top - the top right (not the right
side). Moreover, the autofit button is checked. What I want is for it to be
at the top left so it does not cover the close and minimize buttons of open
windows. I suppose the alternative would be a hack to cause the close,
maximize, and minimize buttons to appear at the top left of any open window
(like Mac OS X).

I've also played with the shortcut bar's "always keep on top" option. This
is also a problem in that the bar becomes obscurred and there is no shortcut
that appears for it with the other open application buttons at the bottom of
the screen.

This is why I use the Quick Launch instead of the Shortcut Bar.

OK, what's Quick Launch? Are you refering to the menu that comes up when you
press the Window button on the keyboard?

Right click on the task bar and choose Toolbars/Quick Launch.

The Quick Launch bar is not layered and would take up too much space if I put
my apps and folders on it. It sounds like no one thought about usability
when it came to Shortcut Bar placement (i.e., there's no solution).

Bob Buckland ?:-\)

If the MS Office Shortcut Bar (discontinued after Office XP)
is set to 'Autofit' it will go to the right side of the
Window titlebar you place it in, but it shouldn't, from that position
be covering the min/restore/max buttons of the window after
you drag it into a titlebar (double clicking on it in the
titlebar restores it to a button bar).

The 'always on top' setting doesn't always function as
expected as other apps that also want to be on top
(in control) can sometimes conflict with it, including
the 'autohide' setting of the Windows Taskbar and some
antivirus software.

You can use the Windows Taskbar (right click create new toolbar)
to create a small bar that you can position on any screen edge
and have it autohide but it doesn't fit into the Title Bar.

Thanks Bob. I didn't know about creating menus in the taskbar. I'll give
it a try.

I'll also note that the shortcut bar DOES cover the min/restore/max buttons
of windows when it's in the top, right position. Moreover, it does NOT
autofit into title bars. When I tried to drag it to Outlook's title bar
(after reading your post) it just turned into a button bar. Besides, if it
resided in a title bar it would only be available when the given app was
maximized.

All this discussion gave me the idea to try the shortcut bar at the bottom
with auto-hide on and always on top off (like Mac OS X). I'll also see how
that goes.
