Re-install problems.

My daughter has come home from uni with a problem PC. The power supply has
been faulty (it was switching itself off at random), so I have replace that.
The Nrton AV software had expired, so I bought a new copy and installed that.
In addition, the Office Professional Edition 2003 which I had previously
installed seems to have disappearded from her PC! It's not shown in the list
of programs that can be run, nor is it shown under "add or remove software".
When I tried to re-install it, I get an error message stating "Install did
not complete properly" (an error report was sent). When I search the hard
disk under My Computer, I can locate all the files under Program Files
(Office11). If I click on the Excel icon, it launches Excel with a message
saying "Microsoft Excel has not been installed for this user. Please run
setup ton install the application", but setup will not work (despite me
keying in the correct product key). PLease help!

How do I go about that? I've tried the obvious (inseting the CD and
attempting to install from scratch). Any other ideas? I've also tried the
advice on this link, to no avail (though I can see no mention of the Security
tab, point 9).

I believe you are logging on to the PC in a limited account, ie not one with
administrator privileges.
Item 9 (not found) tends to suggest this
The repair install of Office is accessed from the installation cd

Thanks for the suggestion DL, and I agree, it would seem the obvious cause,
but it isn't! I have checked and found that both my daughter and I are
registered as Computer Administrators and whether I log on in her name or
mine, I cannot successfully re-install Office, nor can it be found under "Add
or Delete Programs".
Have you any other suggestions?

Have you tried logging on with the default Administrator account?
The Excel err msg is indicative of office being installed in the
Administrator Account only, and not configured for All Users.
I'd also perhaps suggest you post this Q to microsoft.public.win2000.setup
as there may be a profile problem.

I've tried that DL to no avail. I can install other software (e.g. MSN
Messenger), though I have also run into problems getting all elements of
Norton Systemworks to run. For instance, the Speeddisk feature won't lauch,
but WinDoctor and DiskDoctor do. I cannot uninstall and reinstall the Norton
Systemworks either, as it doesn't appear in the list of Programsor under "Add
& remove programs". Is there any relation between the problems do you think?
My daughter seems to think these all started when the old version of NAV
expired.
What might happen if I manually delete all the files on my C drive under the
Office directory? Is this worth doing?

Deleting the App folder is unlikely to clear up the issue, since there will
be many entries in the registry.
If you have multiple Apps, that are installed, but dont appear in Add/Remove
+ these apps only partially work then I believe you either have a corrupt
profile/registry.
At this stage it might be an idea to consider a clean install of the o/s,
having first backed up any data. - gives you something else to do over Xmas!

PS I have found, with Norton apps, if you are not renewing on line, its best
to uninstall, and perhaps visit Symantec site for a special uninstall tool,
prior to installing any new version. Symantec upgrade versions dont
generally check for any qualifying App, if they do simply pop old version CD
in, and point to it. (This also applies to most other upgrade apps)
