Read Only error for opening network file

N

Nelson Leung

I'm using Office XP in Windows 2000 Pro. with Windows 2000 Server for file
sharing, when try to open any network file I always get an error message that
the file is opening by another user and can only open as "Read Only".
I surely know no anyone is opening that file at that time and I finally find
out that the problem is - one of the office application is running => like
the Excel is running with no any file opening, then I try to open any other
network file and will get the error message - Read Only.
When I close all of the office and directly double click that file again, it
can open normally.

Anyone has any idea about this?

Thanks for your helping!

Sounds like you have a bunch of temp files crashed/locked on the
system. When that happens, the apps THINK files are still open, but
they are just leftovers from crashes that were not cleared.

Clean out all ~*.tmp files.

I find that ONLY EXCEL will have this problem -
here is my procedure to get that error message -

1. Double click the file in I:\Nelson\Nelson.xls (I:\ is one of my network
drive)
2. After the file is opened, just close the file but not close the application
3. Double click the any Excel file in any network drive.
4. After the file is opened, just close the file but not close the application
5. Double click again to open the file in I:\Nelson\Nelson.xls
6. Warnning message comes - "Read Only".

Sometime the warnning message will also appear when try to open another
Excel file in step 5.

But using the same procedure foe Word, no such warnning message.

Anyone, please help!!!

Thanks a lots.

So if you can reproduce this error...does that mean that the first
time you open it that it opens without a problem...and that it's only
shortly after you've previously opened it that you get the error.
Meaning also that if you go back to it, say the next day, it's okay?

If this is the case, there may be a delay with your network releasing
the previous file. If the files are still in memory, they can be
ASSUMED to be open. That's why learning out old crashed files helps,
because apps can see those as other version.

But if you did clear those (on the server!) and you're sure there are
none left and no one else can be accessing the file...and if it's not
REALLY read only because you can open it once without the error...then
I would have to say that your server is delaying in releasing those
resources (the file temps).

Although I'd have no idea how to fix that...so if you think that might
be the area of the problem...then check with one of the networking
groups.

Good luck!
