read only format when opening a Word 2003 doc

If I attempt to open a Word 2003 doc, it opens in read only format! I can
open it in safe mode but not normal mode.

Probably a side effect of having an anti-virus Office plugin enabled.
Locate the a-v plugin and disable it.
