reading layout

every time someone sends me a word document as an attachment it always opens
in reading layout. this layout often misses out text, figures in quotations
and is not ergonomic.

i have changed the settings as per the various replies on this forum to
enable it to open normally but each time i
shut down it defaults back to the reading layout.

how can it be changed permanently? so it is in print layout forever as per
previous word. it is upsetting my customers and also my
staff as it is a pain to keep having to manually adjust something all the
time, every day.

If your settings are not being saved, it could be that a Registry key is
damaged (see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/MissingMenusEtc.htm). If
you're on a corporate network, though, it may be that some login script is
resetting your settings to the default.
