really, really slow

Over the last few weeks I have noticed that Word [and
Excel] are really slow to load. I am not on a network,
and have done nothing unusual to my system.
I have noticed that when I am waiting for a document to
load that a notice in the bottom left says 'requesting
virus scan' I have consequently lowered my security
levels as I thought this might cause the problem, but it
is still just as slow.
Any ideas???

Turn off the Norton AV office plug-in.
