Recent problems opening word files

Up until recently my copy of Word has been fine.

Now, if I open a file from Word itself (file - open) it opens with no formatting, no tables, different font, no inserted pictures etc.

However, if I double-click the same file in explorer to open the file and automatically launch Word then it opens perfectly with all the correct elements intact

Why does the same file appear so differently depending upon how I open it and why the change all of a sudden?
