recently used file list

Hi have browsed this site and can't find a solution to my list problem. Like others the checkbox is greyed out. The solution appears to be to go to Tweak Ui, however, I do not have this under the control panel tab or add new document option in start menu. Any other suggestions what I can try? I tried changing my view in word, but that didn't help.
