Recurring Tasks don't Roll up (Attributes?)

MSPP 2007 SP1: Recurring tasks don't rollup on to the group by summary bar.
We set the background color of the Group on Summary bar to yellow and then
rollup the projections of the tasks in the group in gray. (Always Rollup
Gantt Bars is checked.) The resulting summary bar shows yellow for
weekends and any gaps in the time not "covered" by a task.

Normal tasks rollup just fine, but the recurring tasks seem to be invisible
to the rollup. Is there information on what special attributes are set for
recurring tasks? Perhaps, with this info, we could figure out why the
recurring tasks don't roll up to display on the grouped summary bar.

Thanks,
Bruce

(When grouped and collapsed, the rolled up summary bar shows where there are
gaps in assigned work .. for whatever reason.)

I am unclear, are you talking about the PWA view or the Microsoft Project
view? if the latter, try posting in the Microsoft Project newsgroup, not the
Server one. You'll get better results. If the former, reply back here.

Microsoft Project Professional. I assumed all folks using Professional would
be on the Project Server Forum ... although it is reasonable to expect that
the same is true for Microsoft Project Standard.

(I wasn't aware there was a Group By Summary on PWA.)

Thanks.

No problem. Sure you can group views in PWA.

Object naming and newsgroup posting standards are what keeps civizilation
from devolving into pure chaos. ;-)

Hello Bruce,

In experimenting, it appears as though the "Recurring" attribute
prevents the bar from rolling up. I was not able to manually change
the value of the recurring field to "no". But, I was able to
select all occurrences of a recurring task (without selecting the
summary task), cut and paste them back over one another. This set
the recurring field to "No" and then the bars did roll up nicely to
the summary tasks.

I hope this helps.

Julie:

Thanks,

I did see your earlier post on the subject. I think we both wanted to
retain the nice properties of the recurring task (right-click update all,
etc.) plus the ability to see these rolled up. I was just hoping that later
versions had enabled that.

We are considering extensive use of recurring tasks and it would mean a lot
of reprocessing to convert the detail tasks to regular tasks. I might VB it.

I guess the mystery is Why? these would be excluded from rollup and why this
overrides any other parameters that we might set to enable rollup. I am sure
there's a good reason someplace.

Thanks,
Bruce

Hi Bruce,

You're welcome. As to the "why", I couldn't even begin to guess :)
You'll need to balance the pros of recurring (ease of updating, etc)
against the oddity in the rollup, I guess.

As a side comment, you may wish to update your installation of 2007
to SP-2. I tested using SP-2 to the results I noted below, so that
is not a driving reason, but I do notice more stability in the
product.

Good luck.

Julie
