red cross when trying to read picture clippings in word v.X document

Adam

I have a word document that contains 7 Picture clippings created on a
PC version of word that will open correctly on a number of Windows
systems.
I am using OS 10.2.6 and Office 10.1.3 on a G3 iMac.
When opening this document on the iMac 3 out of the 7 picture
clippings display correctly the others show only a red cross.
On a Windows version of Word I can see no difference between the
properties of the 7 clippings.
If I open the document up using Appleworks 6.2.4 as a Word 2000
document the clippings are all displayed but not to an acceptable
quality.
Any clues please ???
I can send a copy If anybody is interested (352 KB)

Hi Adam:

We do have some bugs in this area on Word X.

Generally, if the picture is "good" you can double-click it in Word X and it
will display in an edit window. Simply close it and then save the document,
and that should sort it out.

If it doesn't, chances are the pictures are inserted as linked but the
source file is unavailable.

The red cross officially means "The picture file cannot be found", which
will be the case when a linked picture's file is not available to a
different computer. That could be because the different computer is not
connected to the same network, or because the user signed on to that
computer does not have network permissions to access those files.

Your problem in AppleWorks is due to the fact that the picture has two
components: PICT bitmap and WMF or EMF vector. AppleWorks can't work out
how to interpret the vector so it's falling back to the bitmap.

Cheers
