Red Paragraph Mark (and it is not Change Tracking)

I'm working on a document from another company. It is a complex contract
that uses Word Styles extensively. I understand most of what they are doing,
but I can't figure out why for one of the sytles, the paragraph marks are
always red.

Change tracking is turned off, and I have accepted all changes anyway, so
that isn't it.

I have seen this in another document, and IIRC, the formatting was applied
intentionally to indicate, even when nonprinting characters were displayed,
that the paragraph mark was formatted as Hidden. (Actually, in the other
document I saw, another character, both Hidden and colored had been added in
front of the Hidden paragraph mark, presumably because coloring the
paragraph mark itself can have adverse effects on numbering, which takes on
the formatting of the paragraph mark--though if it's Hidden, anyway, I guess
that wouldn't be an issue. Hmm.)

Hidden paragraph marks are often used in styled paragraphs, particularly
where outline/legal numbering is used. Some of the proprietary numbering
solutions used by lawfirms use this feature extensively to prevent entire
paragraphs from being brought into a table of contents. Usually, the hidden
text (in this case a paragraph mark) has colour applied to it so that users
editing on screen know not to delete the hidden text.
