regarding start and finish dates

this is regarding start & finish dates fields.

in my project i have abot 10-20 summary tasks and all of them have on
average 7-8 subtasks.

now the problem is when increase the duration of subtask it changes the
finish date of that and start date of its successor. but it doesnt keep the
duration of the successor dependent summary task same as before, it gets
reduced and it doesnt take the finish date of that task further to keep the
duration same.

eg. 1. ABC 20 days? Fri 5/30/08 Mon 6/23/08
a 1d Fri 5/30/08 sat
5/31/08
b 12d Sun 6/8/08 Mon 6/23/08 a

2. XYZ 23.69 days? Tue 6/24/08 Wed 7/23/08 1
x 3d Tue 6/24/08 Sat 6/28/08
y 3d Sat 6/28/08 Tue 7/1/08

now when i changed the duration of subtask b to 20 days, it changed the
finish date of the b and also reduces the duration of the XYZ to 16.31 days.

is there any way that MSP 2003 keeps the duration same as before and changes
the date automatically.

i have tried my to explain the problem. if any doubts in understaing let me
know.

thanks

Project can't change a task's duration and keep the dates the same. The
duration is simply the difference between the Start Date and the Finish
Date. In CPM parlance, Early Finish = Early Start + Duration. That
relationship can't be altered. It can be affected by many other factors.
I'm not sure what you want here, so it would help if you elucidate on what
you need.
As for the second issue, where increating task b's duration causes summary
line XYZ's duration to decrease, it could be a number of things. Most
likely, the subtask of XYZ that is deterimining when it starts(lets' call
it q) is dependent on b's finish. If b finishes earlier, that subtask
starts earlier. If b finishes later, q starts later. Some other subtask of
XYZ is determining it's finish, and remains constant. So when b's duration
increases, q starts later, and XYZ's duration decreases. Make sense?
Hope this helps in your world.

I notice there is no link indicated for task "y" so how is its start date of
June 28 being determined? Do you actually have a link from task "x" that
you failed to list or have you attempted to set "y"s start date manually and
ended up with a SNET link on it? If it's the latter, the way you've posted,
then the change in the duration of the first summary will push back the
start of subtask "x" but it WON'T push back the start of "y", meaning that
2.XYZ now starts later but finishes on the same date as before with the
change being that "x" and "y" now overlap each other by one day where they
didn't overlap before.
