Remaining Work added to a resource who has completed work on a tas

there is a task that has several resources assigned to it. The task still
has remaining work, but the resource has completed his work, actual start /
finish dates have been filled in. In hindsite, the resource really didn't
finish the task and so in the resource usage view 40h of remaining work was
added. MSP did add 40 h but in increments of .08h per day which extended the
end date of the task by several months. Why didn't it add 8h per day which
is the resources available time?

I'm confused, too. By chance, when you assigned the resource to the task
originally, did you assign the resource at 1% Units? If so, when you
increase the Remaining Work on the resource's task assignment, Microsoft
Project assigns the Work at the original assignment Units, which in your
case would be 1% Units or .08 hours per day. Let us know if this helps.

Dale, you are correct - original assignment % was 0% - this is a fixed
duration task that was meant to have no work assigned but just track actuals
- much like an administrative plan. As actuals were entered through the
timesheet the units displayed what % of availability the actual hours were.
The units currently display 100% which is the max units. In task usage I
displayed percent allocated, it adds the 40h at 1%. If I change the finish
date to some time in the future the work is calcualted at percent allocated
for the last day actuals entered which is 75%... no matter what I do, if I
change RW then it gets allocated at 1%. Do you have any idea how I could
change RW and use the %allocated that I want? Is there a book that gives you
detailed information on what happens to units and the best way to maintain a
project plan?

I found your information very useful and thank you very much for your
response.

I doubt there is any book that details such a specific situation as yours.
If I were you in your situation, I would manually contour the additional
Work for the resource in the Task Usage view. First of all, set the
Remaining Work to 0 hours for this resource. Then, in the timesheet grid on
the right side of the Task Usage view, type the Work hours the way you want
the resource to do the work. By doing this, you are creating a Contoured
work pattern on the task. If you want to purchase a good book about the
best ways to use Microosft Project 2007, and to learn about how to properly
use it's advanced features as well, you might want to consider our Ultimate
Learning Guide... book at:

Hope this helps.

Dale,
Thank you very much for your response. I did suggest this to the plan owner
and I think that is what he will do. Do you know of a way to display the
original assignment units? All of the views I seem to look at show max units
or units for a specific day.

I will also look into getting a copy of the book for my company.

thanks again!

No, I know of no way to see the original assignment Units value. As you
have already learned, you can see the Units for each day, plus the Max
Units, but not the original assignment Units value. Hope this helps. And
thanks for considering our book. :)
