Remembering Password

B

Bob Richardson

When I want to publish my web, I get the "Connect to www.myweb.com" dialog
box, which asks for user name and password. On most of the Webs I work on,
this information is already filled in (there's a remember my password check
box already checked) and it's an easy process.

On one web this is not the case. There is no "Remember my password" check
box, and both the user name and password have to be typed in each time.

Is there a setting somewhere that affects this. I'd like to avoid typing
this info in every time I publish.

I do not have an easy solution[1], but for curiosity value would like to
know:

Are you using Windows XP Home?
On a Lap-Top?
Publishing to a Windows server?

[1] I had the problem, and cured it by upgrading to Windows XP Pro.

Passwords used by FP are "stored" using IE
In IE use Tools > Internet Options > Security
Click on 'Trusted' and on 'Custom Level'
Make sure the selection at the bottom is set to:
'Automatic logon with current username and password' and click OK
Click on 'Sites' and add your site URL in the 'Add this Web Site to the Zone', and OK, OK
- note: you may have to unselect the option: Require server verification (https)... to add your site

This is only effective if you can save the password in the first place.
Bob's problem amounts to
'There is no "Remember my password" check box'
which I also had on my WinXP Home Lap-top, but only for Windows servers.
(Fixed it by upgrading to XP Pro.)

I regard the lack of a 'Remember my password' check box as a security
feature on a lap-top running WinXP Home.

I think it is an IE setting you forgot to set (-;
(not XPpro vs XPhome or laptop vs desktop - I have used it on all 4)

In IE Tools Internet Options Content Auto Complete
If User names and Passwords is not checked (default setting) and
Prompt Me to save Passwords is not checked (default setting)
or if you ever click the Do Not Remind Me option when asked if you want IE to save it,
IE will never save it

After setting those on, to get it to save again (remove the site from trusted zone) and Use File Publish (or remote site settings)
which should force a new log in dialog w/ option to save,
then add it back to trusted

I added my url to the Trusted Site list (and also everything else you
suggested). No luck. I still don't get the "Remember my password" check box
and I still have to enter it each time.

I am using XP Home on a Desktop. FP 2003, IE6.0

Two other webs that I work on with this computer have the "Remember my
password" check box, and don't require me to typed them each time I want to
publish.

Here's one little difference between the web in question, and the other
webs. The problem web also has two sub webs. Could that the reason? I doubt
it, because this web exhibited the tedious logon problem even before I added
the sub-webs.

That's possible, I cannot check it now, having upgraded :)
But, FrontPage logon details for Unix sites were saved, and IE saved UserIDs
and Passwords for most sites browsed to, which it wouldn't if those settings
were not checked.
It was only FrontPage access to 5 sites on 3 Windows 2003 servers that did
not produce the save password box.

Subwebs have no bearing
Try deleting the web from My Network places and reopening in FP using File Open Web/Site

Your are right...this web was listed under My Network places. None of my
other webs, which all have the "remember my password" (RMP)check box, were
listed under Network Places. So there is a strong implication that the fix
lies along that line.

After deleting BadWeb from network places I opened FP and tried to publish -
still no RMP box. Next I created a new one page web (BadWeb2) and the
copied all the files and folders from BadWeb to BadWeb2. Same problem!!

Now I'm stuck.

When I create a brand new web, and try to connect to my web (
www.writeonwhidbey.org )I don't get the RMP box. Is it possible that some
setting at the host could prevent the automatic log in?
