Remove bold from text, but it goes back to bold.

I am using word 2002, XP. I have a document that ir remove bold from each of the paragraph headings and save the document. When I reopen the document the headings are all in bold again. This is not a template.

What am I doing wrong? Help!

1. How was the bold formatting applied to the headings originally? As
part of a style (which one?) or directly?

2. If part of a style, go to Tools/Templates and Addins and look if the
check box for automatically updating styles on open is activated?
