Removing resource with unfinished tasks

D

Dan McCarty

In the middle of a project we had a resources leave and he had many
unfinished tasks in the project. Some of his tasks were unstarted and
some of them were finished, but a lot of them are partly finished.
What's the best way to remove this resource and assign the tasks to
someone else?

TIA,
Dan.

Open the Assign Resources dialog box.
Select a task
Select the name of the resource who has departed
Click Replace
Select the name of the replacement resource
Repeat for other affected tasks

Hello Dan,

In the Assign Resources dialog box, use the Replace button...

Hi,

Moreover, you can save quite some time by selecting all the tasks the
leaving resource is on, that way you have to replace only once.

What about for tasks that are partly finished? For example, I have
task #112: Main screen: code and graphics. It's 50% done. If I go to
replace my departed resource with another resource I get the message
"The selected item has some actual values. Do you still want to delete
it?" I don't think I want to delete the already-finished work on that
task, do I?

As said previously, don't *delete* the resource, *replace* it (Click the
"Replace" button)

I *did* try to replace it. When I click the Replace button the
resource list goes from
Jim L [100%]
to
Dan [50%]
Jim L [100%]

If I try to click his name and Replace him *again* (with myself again),
I get a message about not being able to assign a resource to a task
twice. That makes sence.

But when I click OK to dismiss the message another message pops up
about deleting an item with "actual values" (as opposed to just
"values," apparently).

I don't want to delete any work done on the project. How can I just
replace the remaining work with another resource?

This is Project 2003, BTW.

Hi Dan,
These results may be correct if you changed, for example, the task duration
while the task type was set to "fixed work" (while the %Complete was already
50% for ex). The resource Jim L is assigned full time during some days and
part time the other days.
When you *replace* Jim L by Dan, Ms Project replace Jim L only on the
remaining work, may be at part time.
So after the replacement, the assignments are : Jim L [100%];Dan [50%]

Hope this helps,

Okay, that explains it. Thanks for your help.

Best regards,
Dan.
