Removing shading from a table cell

I have a Word table that may have been converted from a
different software. Selected cells contain gray shading.
I am trying to remove the shading from some of the cells
and I have been unable to do so. I have tried changing
the background and fill to clear or white and it has no
affect on the shading. I have gone into Borders and
Shading and Tables and Borders and am unable to remove the
shading. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks.

When you went to Borders and Shading did you go down to

the area where it says Pattern and select clear? Then to
the left make sure you have clicked cell or paragrah or
whatever area you want.
