Person,
Realize that a summary line is not a task, it is simply a summarization
of the performance tasks under it. If the work effort is scheduled to be
performed at the individual task level, which it should, then how could
the actual hours be properly reported by entering them at the summary
level?

To answer your question, no, actual hours cannot be entered at summary
level, and for good reason.

I agree with John in regards to entering the hours at the task level and
absolutely NOT at the summary level, however, once entered at the task level
those hours should appear summarized at the summary line level. This summary
level accumulation of task hours can then be viewed by selecting
"Project/Filtered For/Summary Tasks". This should provide a view where only
the summary tasks appear including the columns displaying hours. Hopefully
this view aligns with what you refer to as a report.

Hope this helps.

Mark,

Your answer gets me part way there. I know I can "view" the summary info
the way you say, but I need to print a report with the data.

The "Cash Flow" report is the report I need, but for my boss, he only needs
the info at a phase summary level. But he needs it for several projects
which I would include in one Master Project report.

Is there a way to make the "Cash Flow" (or any other report show Work data
at the summary level?

gwholley,
You can apply the Summary Task filter to the Cash Flow report. Just hit
"edit" when you open the Cost Reports window. Apply the filter and you
are ready to go.

I tried that and it does indeed list only the summary tasks, but it does not
roll up the costs to that level. I basically get a blank report except for a
list of the summary tasks and the grid lines that define the report.

What am I missing?

Wayne,
You aren't missing anything. To not have the Cash Flow report show
rollups seems pretty dumb to me, but that's the way it was designed. I
never use the reports feature - and that's one of the reasons why. Try
the Task Usage view instead. Apply the Summary Task filter and you
should get the data you want.

I was beginning to think that was where I was headed. To take such a nice
looking feature and screw it up by making it inflexible, how dumb (or is it
lazy!).

Wayne,
I never was enamored by the reports feature of Project. To me they are
nothing much more than custom formats for views with the added "feature"
that they aren't very flexible and can't be exported. The developers did
a much better job with Project 2007 when they added the Visual Reports
feature. It still can't do what a good VBA macro can do, but it's a
start in the right direction.
