the resize check box is grey-out and I want to know why? It is something to
be installed or missing. I want to change the size of the box to fit the
text. I do not want to change the size of the text.

Is the autoshape selected when you choose Format=>Autoshape/

If the autoshape is not a textbox did you right
click on the shape to select 'Add text'?

can disable the resizing settings.
