I just did a quick experiment - I inserted a very large image into
PowerPoint. Even though the image was very large (much bigger than the
slide) the resolution was still only 72dpi (the default resolution for most
digital cameras). So, when I applied the Compress Picture feature, and saved
the file, it made no difference to the file size.
However, when I scaled the image down to fit the slide, and then used
Compress Pictures, PowerPoint resampled the image and the file size dropped
dramatically.
