resource allocation max

How can I make so that, if a resources allocation is 40% max per day (3 hrs),
and I assign a task that is 4 hours long, Project will assign three hours one
day and 1 hour the next day without overallocating the resource. Can I do
this retroactively?

Moving Forward, I would do Window/Split...
In the bottom pane, use task type fixed units, effort driven=checked.
On the left side assign the resource and key in the amount of work required.
Project will calculate duration for you.

Forthat already created tasks, I would change the task type to fixed work
and then change the Units% assigned to the resource down to 40%

There is probably more than one way to accomplish this.
