Resource Efficiency

Hi all,

I'm working on my yearend planning for a development firm. I want to
evaluate the impacts of moving resource from one project to another on the
delivery dates when for example, 1 resource is working 100% on project A and
3 resources are working 50% of their time for the same project. Would like
to see the Gannt be modified.

Anyway to do this in Project?

Here's my situation:

- 5 Projects
- 50 ressources
- Ressources will move from one project to another depending the development
stage. When the project start there will be maybe 2 people working and at
the end 5 people.
- All projects require 3000 hours

Paul,
This type of resource allocation is really the job of the Project
Manager working in conjunction with the functional organizations that
supply the labor resources. Without more specifics it is a little
difficult to say whether some type of resource "what-if" scenario could
be atuomated. After all there are many variables to consider (e.g.
resource availability, skill levels, project needs, etc.).

Of course, there is always the manual approach wherein the manager loads
each project with resources, sets a baseline for comparison, and then
re-allocates some or all of the resources to see the effect.

I guess to answer you question, yes it is possible to do what you want
with Project. How easy and how automated that process can be depends on
the detail.

Hope this helps.

hi,
You can create a set of resources that is available for assignment to
project tasks. A resource pool can be used exclusively by one project or can
be shared by several projects.

Use a resource pool when you (or another project manager) want to use shared
resources whose information comes from a separate resource pool file.

Here is how to create a resource pool and link it to projects.

With your current project open, click New to create the new project file
that will become the resource pool.
Click Save .
In the Save in box, click the name of the folder where you want to save the
resource pool.
In the File name box, type a file name that clearly indicates that it is a
resource pool, such as ResourcePool, and then click Save.
On the View menu, click Resource Sheet.
On the View menu, point to Table, and then click Entry.
In the Resource Name field, type a resource name.
Enter basic information, such as resource type, resource group, and maximum
units (maximum units: The maximum percentage or number of units that a
resource is available to be scheduled for any tasks. The maximum units value
indicates the highest capacity at which the resource is available for work;
the default value is 100 percent.).
Repeat steps 7–8 for all resources you want to add.
On the Window menu, click the name of your project file.
On the Tools menu, point to Resource Sharing, and then click Share Resources.
Click Use resources, and then, in the From box, click the resource pool file.
Under On conflict with calendar or resource information, choose the file
that should take precedence if resource information conflicts (for example,
if a resource has a standard rate of $30 in one file and $40 in another).
Click Pool takes precedence if the project file that you want to borrow
resources from should overwrite resource information in the sharer file. This
option is highly recommended.
Click Sharer takes precedence if the sharer file should overwrite resource
information in the resource pool and other sharer files.
Note Resource information from each project is added to the new resource
pool and made available to each sharer file as it is shared.

Click OK. Note that assignment information is never overwritten.
Click Save .
On the Window menu, click the resource pool file, and then click Save.
Note Do not enter any task information in the resource pool.

Kind regards,
