resource sharing

We have a number of projects of various sizes sharing a
resource pool in order to facilitate labor forecasting.
The entire resource pool is duplicated in every project.
Is there a way to cut down the size of the sharing project
files?

Create a resource pool to which all others project will
become sharer files. Create a new file with all the
resources you want to use. And then use the resource
sharing tool (Tools, Share Resources). The disadvantage
is that you will have to have the resource pool open in
order to make changes, so if you're sharing with multiple
project managers, this process will become cumbersome.

Hope this helps!

I did that, but the entire resource pool gets duplicated
in every sharing project and the book I have (QUE Special
Edition) says that's the default behaviour. I'm trying to
see if there's a way to have only the resources used by a
project stored in that project file?

No matter how you state the question, the answer is still no. When you use
a shared resource pool, every resource is shared with every project
connected to the pool. This is the default behavior of the tool, and cannot
be changed.

If this behavior is not acceptable, then perhaps your organization needs to
consider using Project Server 2002 or 2003. Using either of these tools
with Microsoft Project Professional, you can build a project team for each
project using resources from an enterprise resource pool. The resources in
each project are limited to only those you select to be on the project team.
Hope this helps.

Actually, you did provide a satisfactory answer. We are in
the process of going to set up Project Server, so I'll
make do until it is available.

I'm glad you are moving to Project Server. I believe you will find this a
more useful platform for doing the things you want to do. Have you
considered using a Microsoft Project Partner to assist your implementation?

Its essential to ensure you have no blank rows in the resoruce tables
as it quadruples file size..
