Resources working on same task separately?

Martin Eckart

Hi NG,

I am pretty new to Project. I would like to plan working time for my team
with it. I have several different tasks where often more than one resource
is involved. I am not interested in timing the tasks according to the
availability of all resources related to them.
Is there a way to enable a resource working on a task even though the other
resource related to the task is not available yet?

Thanks,
Martin

Hi Martin,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

You will need to set up resource calendars via Tools/Change working time.
You can assign as many resources as you like to a single task, though
general advice is to stick with the principle of one task/one resource.
Then you need to level the resources through Tools/Resource levelling.
There are a many facets and pitfalls for the uninitiated, though, and I
would strongly recommend at least a 2 day introductory course on Project to
get you up and running quickly.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: <http://www.mvps.org/project/>

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on:)

Thanks Mike for your quick reply.
In know that if I need to use Project in a more leveraged way I will have to
go into some training classes. I am using a handbook and trying to solve my
problem. I think it should not be a major one.

All I need would be the knowledge how to set up a task so that the 2
Resources assigned to the task can work separately on it whenever their
separate Calendars allow them to spend time on it.
Example: Task A, Resources 1 and 2 have to work each of them 5 days to
complete it.
Resource 1 has 5 days in August, Resource 2 3 in July and 2 in September. I
want Resource 2 to spend the 3 days on July and the 2 days in September on
the task, in August Resource 1 should spend its 5 days on it. They don't
have to work on it together.

Currently I have entered all tasks, the resources working on them and the
timelines. For some resources they work 0 hours on some days and 16 hours on
other days. Reason: They are always waiting for the other resources being
available they need to start working on the specific task.

I hope I could make it clear,

Martin

OK Martin,

Have you set up the resource calendars? Assign the resources to the tasks.
Level resources - ensure the "Levelling can adjust individual assignments on
a task " is checked.

Alternatively, use the Task Usage view and type in the work on the required
days.

Hi Martin,

To put it simply, what you ask is standard.
It's teh contrary (demanding simultaneous work) that is bvery hard to do in
Project

It still does not work.
I entered Start and End Date of the Project, the correct Calendars of the
Resources and then leveled them.
For some Resources they don't get their work done in time so they exceed the
Project Finish date. When going into details I still find some days for the
specific resources where they don't work 8h (which is my maximum), but 1.2
or even 0!

Getting frustrated now....

Hi Martin,
Is Resource lEVELING SET TO AUTOMATIC? If so, put to manual
By all means, cross ON "Leveling can adjust individual assignments on a
task"
