restore a deleted contact

Drag & drop it from the Deleted Items folder into the Contacts folder

The message you sent? You said you deleted a distribution list. Thus, that
DL should be in the Deleted Items folder. You weren't talking about a
message before. Drag the DL back to the Contacts folder.

And, by the way, if you've sorted the Deleted Items folder by date, the list
could be anywhere, as the date in question will (I think) be the create date
for that list.

Also, I've done exactly the same thing you did more than once.
