Retain normal.dot (Word 2003 settings) in Word 2007

I am trying to come up with the best method for preserving user settings (in
normal.dot) from Word 2003 after installing Office 2007.

When you run Word 2007 for the first time, it will rename normal.dot to
normal11.dot, and will create a new normal.dotm based on MS defaults. If you
want to revert to your Word 2003 settings, you need to delete normal.dotm,
and rename normal11 back to normal.dot, then, since it is not the first run
of Word 2007, it will convert normal.dot to normal.dotm. the fact that it is
not the first run anymore is detected in the registry:
hkcu\software\microsoft\office\12.0\word\options\FirstRun.

I could use the Office Customisation Tool to create a registry setting so
that as soon as Office 2007 is installed it looks as though it will not be
the first run of Word, so that it converts normal.dot to normal.dotm. BUT I
dont know what else is done during the first run of Word, and if its a bad
idea to bypass the first run using that registry setting. I dont want to fix
this one isue only to create more issues later on....

Does anyone have any suggestions, or maybe know of a registry setting that
will convert normal.dot to normal.dotm on first run instead of creating a new
template/normal.dotm?

thank you
